Open Source is gaining ground in Malaysia.. Colin Dodd<br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<pre><p>In Malaysia, it is estimated that the number of companies opting for Linux-based solutions will \u00adexperience about a 15% \u00adcompounded average growth rate between now and 2012, said Daniel Ng, director of marketing for Red Hat Asia Pacific.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cEven now, there is a total of 936 implementations of open-source solutions in Malaysian Government agencies,\u201d he said in a press briefing in Kuala Lumpur recently. Government support<\/p>\r\n<p>Michael Tiemann, Red Hat\u2019s vice-president of open-source affairs said Malaysia is one of the top countries that have implemented open-source solutions well.<\/p>\r\n<p>He said the Malaysian \u00adgovernment has taken open-source technology seriously by setting up the Open-Source Competency Centre, which comes under the jurisdiction of the Malaysian Administration and Modernisation Planning Unit Mampu.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cThere are individuals taking responsibility for specific initiatives in the open-source circle and the initiatives are strengthened with strong promotion by the Government and the players in this sector,\u201d he said at a press briefing after a meeting with Government officials in Kuala Lumpur.<\/p><\/pre>\n<p class=\"postmetadata\">This entry was posted by <a title=\"Posts by T. Government support<\/p>\r\n<p>Michael Tiemann, Red Hat\u2019s vice-president of open-source affairs said Malaysia is one of the top countries that have implemented open-source solutions well.<\/p>\r\n<p>He said the Malaysian \u00adgovernment has taken open-source technology seriously by setting up the Open-Source Competency Centre, which comes under the jurisdiction of the Malaysian Administration and Modernisation Planning Unit (Mampu).<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cThere are individuals taking responsibility for specific initiatives in the open-source circle and the initiatives are strengthened with strong promotion by the Government and the players in this sector,\u201d he said at a press briefing after a meeting with Government officials in Kuala Lumpur.<\/p>\r\n<p>Tiemann and Ng said the World Wide Web and the effort by \u00adcompanies to lower operational costs are driving the adoption of open-source solutions in Malaysia.<\/p>\r\n<p>Tiemann said the emergence of the Web became the greatest driver of open-source solutions.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cThe Web is already an open-source solution and it has become a platform to distribute a collection of inventive applications,\u201d he said.<\/p>\r\n<p>At the enterprise level, Tiemann said open-source solutions allowed companies to modify and build solutions that best suit their needs.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cProprietary solutions may offer the same features but they don\u2019t give users the licence to modify the source codes to fit their needs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\r\n<p>Ng added that the current \u00adfinancial crisis is also a blessing in disguise for Red Hat and other open-source players.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cA little more than six months ago some companies we approached shied away from open-source, but now the same \u00adcompanies are coming back to us to weigh the possibilities of running open-source solutions,\u201d Ng said.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Wide open<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>Given the great acceptance and execution of open-source \u00adtechnology in Malaysia, Ng said Red Hat will increase its efforts to \u00addevelop the sector in the country.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cWe are interested in bringing the open-source collaborative initiative to Malaysia to help solve two \u00adproblems \u2014 the lack of business solutions as well as technical skills in open-source technology,\u201d Ng said.<\/p>\r\n<p>Ng added that once these \u00adfoundations are laid, the open-source movement will be more active in Malaysia.<\/p>\r\n<p>He said open-source can enable independent software vendors (ISVs) to develop more business solutions thus solving the first hurdle.<\/p>\r\n<p>Red Hat, Ng said, is working with the Government and agencies like Mampu to help the ISVs understand how open-source tools can enable them to develop more homegrown solutions like MyMeeting.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cThe digital world calls for a different kind of investment. It\u2019s not ringgit and sens but collaboration and relationship building,\u201d he said.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Controlling technology<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>Ng said Red Hat is also making itself heard in institutes of higher \u00adlearning to ensure that there is a sustainable talent pool of people to work in open-source technology.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cWe launched the region\u2019s first open-source Masters degree with UniSim (University Singapore Institute of Management),\u201d he said.<\/p>\r\n<p>Red Hat also plans to beef up its operations in Malaysia to give back to the local open-source \u00adcommunity, Ng said.<\/p>\r\n<p>One of its approaches is to bring the open-source collaborative \u00adinnovative initiative (OSCII) to open up open-source technology to the masses.<\/p>\r\n<p>Such initiatives will help the masses understand technology better and then make better \u00addecisions, Tiemann said.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cIf they understand technology they can control technology instead of being controlled or limited by technology,\u201d he said.<\/p><\/div>\r\n<\/pre>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last month i read the Redhat Magazine but forgot to blogging about this article..
