Last month i read the Redhat Magazine but forgot to blogging about this article.. Open Source is gaining ground in Malaysia.. That is reality not the fantasy…Yes the open source will become the leader for the operating system soon in malaysia

Here is the Article that wrote in Redhat Magazine by T. Colin Dodd

In Malaysia, it is estimated that the number of companies opting for Linux-based solutions will experience about a 15% compounded average growth rate between now and 2012, said Daniel Ng, director of marketing for Red Hat Asia Pacific.

“Even now, there is a total of 936 implementations of open-source solutions in Malaysian Government agencies,” he said in a press briefing in Kuala Lumpur recently. Government support

Michael Tiemann, Red Hat’s vice-president of open-source affairs said Malaysia is one of the top countries that have implemented open-source solutions well.

He said the Malaysian government has taken open-source technology seriously by setting up the Open-Source Competency Centre, which comes under the jurisdiction of the Malaysian Administration and Modernisation Planning Unit Mampu.

“There are individuals taking responsibility for specific initiatives in the open-source circle and the initiatives are strengthened with strong promotion by the Government and the players in this sector,” he said at a press briefing after a meeting with Government officials in Kuala Lumpur.

By JO TIMBUONG

KUALA LUMPUR: OPEN-SOURCE software adoption is set to experience a steady growth in Malaysia, said open-source technology solutions provider, Red Hat Inc. According to a report titled The State of Open Source by industry analyst firm Gartner, more than 90% of enterprises worldwide will be using open-source solutions by 2012. Government support Michael Tiemann, Red Hat’s vice-president of open-source affairs said Malaysia is one of the top countries that have implemented open-source solutions well. He said the Malaysian government has taken open-source technology seriously by setting up the Open-Source Competency Centre, which comes under the jurisdiction of the Malaysian Administration and Modernisation Planning Unit (Mampu). “There are individuals taking responsibility for specific initiatives in the open-source circle and the initiatives are strengthened with strong promotion by the Government and the players in this sector,” he said at a press briefing after a meeting with Government officials in Kuala Lumpur. Tiemann and Ng said the World Wide Web and the effort by companies to lower operational costs are driving the adoption of open-source solutions in Malaysia. Tiemann said the emergence of the Web became the greatest driver of open-source solutions. “The Web is already an open-source solution and it has become a platform to distribute a collection of inventive applications,” he said. At the enterprise level, Tiemann said open-source solutions allowed companies to modify and build solutions that best suit their needs. “Proprietary solutions may offer the same features but they don’t give users the licence to modify the source codes to fit their needs,” he said. Ng added that the current financial crisis is also a blessing in disguise for Red Hat and other open-source players. “A little more than six months ago some companies we approached shied away from open-source, but now the same companies are coming back to us to weigh the possibilities of running open-source solutions,” Ng said. Wide open Given the great acceptance and execution of open-source technology in Malaysia, Ng said Red Hat will increase its efforts to develop the sector in the country. “We are interested in bringing the open-source collaborative initiative to Malaysia to help solve two problems — the lack of business solutions as well as technical skills in open-source technology,” Ng said. Ng added that once these foundations are laid, the open-source movement will be more active in Malaysia. He said open-source can enable independent software vendors (ISVs) to develop more business solutions thus solving the first hurdle. Red Hat, Ng said, is working with the Government and agencies like Mampu to help the ISVs understand how open-source tools can enable them to develop more homegrown solutions like MyMeeting. “The digital world calls for a different kind of investment. It’s not ringgit and sens but collaboration and relationship building,” he said. Controlling technology Ng said Red Hat is also making itself heard in institutes of higher learning to ensure that there is a sustainable talent pool of people to work in open-source technology. “We launched the region’s first open-source Masters degree with UniSim (University Singapore Institute of Management),” he said. Red Hat also plans to beef up its operations in Malaysia to give back to the local open-source community, Ng said. One of its approaches is to bring the open-source collaborative innovative initiative (OSCII) to open up open-source technology to the masses. Such initiatives will help the masses understand technology better and then make better decisions, Tiemann said. “If they understand technology they can control technology instead of being controlled or limited by technology,” he said.

Negri ruler and former Agong Tuanku Ja’afar dies (updated)

SEREMBAN: Negri Sembilan Yang diPertuan Besar Tuanku Ja’afar Tuanku Abdul Rahman, who was the nation’s 10th Yang diPertuan Agong from 1994 to 1999, died at about 11.45am Saturday. He was 86 years old.

State Secretary Datuk Norzam Mohd Nor confirmed this at a press conference at the Tuanku Ja’afar Hospital here.

Tuanku Ja’afar had earlier complained of dizziness and chest discomfort.

“The hospital was contacted and two senior consultants, Datuk Dr Tarmizi Thayaparan and Datuk Dr K. Sree Raman, rushed to the Istana Hinggap here to attend to Tuanku,” Norzam told a special news conference to announce the demise at the hospital’s VIP room.

Also present at the news conference were Negeri Sembilan police chief Datuk Osman Salleh, State Director of Health Dr Zainal Arifin Omar and members of the royal family, according to a Bernama report.

Norzam said the two specialists arrived at Istana Hinggap at 8.25am and found Tuanku Ja’afar to be too weak but conscious and they advised that he be taken immediately to hospital.

“Tuanku was rushed to the Tuanku Ja’afar Hospital and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and was administered emergency treatment.

“I wish to state here that Tuanku Ja’afar passed away at 11.45am at the Tuanku Ja’afar Hospital,” he said, Bernama reported. Norzam said Tuanku Ja’afar’s remains would be taken to the Istana Besar Seri Menanti in Kuala Pilah for the lying-in-state ceremony before being laid to rest after the asar prayers on Monday.

He also said that this was to allow for the return of Tuanku Ja’afar’s children who were abroad.

Norzam said Tuanku Ja’afar’s remains would be placed in the Balairong Seri (Throne Room) of the Istana Besar Seri Menanti to enable members of the royalty, leaders and the public to pay their last respects.

He said the state had declared 40 days of mourning from Saturday and all official government functions over the next seven days have been postponed.

“All government offices and buildings must fly the state flag at half-mast for the 40 days. During the mourning period, all male government employees must wear the songkok bearing a white band while the female employees are required to wear a white band on a sleeve.

“All entertainment outlets must also postpone all their activities over the next seven days from today,” he said, according to the Bernama report. Norzam said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, who is on holiday in London, was expected back at 10am Sunday.

Distinguished service
Born in 1922, Tuanku Ja’afar studied at Malay College Kuala Kangsar before graduating from the University of Nottingham. He then attended Balliol College in Oxford.

During the Japanese occupation, he served at the Seremban Land Office and as district officer of Rembau from 1946 to 1947. Upon his return from Britain in 1952, he held several posts in the civil service.

In 1957, he took up a special course for diplomatic services in London and was appointed Charge d’ Affaires in Washington DC, then as First Secretary with the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, and later was Consular and Deputy High Commissioner at the High Commission of Malaya in London.

Tuanku Ja’afar was later appointed the Malaysian Ambassador to Egypt and then High Commissioner to Nigeria and Ghana.

He was recalled by the Negri Sembilan state government after the death of his brother Tuanku Munawir, the state ruler, and was appointed Ruler in 1967.

Tuanku Ja’afar was the 10th Yang diPertuan Agong of Malaysia.

He leaves behind wife Tuanku Najihah Tunku Besar Burhanuddin, three sons and three daughters.

Internet Slow.. Cable problem

I just read from bloomberg got the problem for the world communication especially the internet connection.

Severed Cables in Mediterranean Disrupt Communication (Update4)

Dec. 19 (Bloomberg) — Internet and telephone communications between the Middle East and Europe were disrupted after three undersea cables connecting Italy and Egypt in the Mediterranean Sea were damaged.

The failures cut the flow of “data of various kinds” between Europe and the Middle East, and there’s no timeframe for when communications will be restored, said Sanjeev Gaur, director of assurance at Reliance Globalcom Ltd. in India. France Telecom SA, which plans to send a maintenance boat to fix the problem, said the situation should be back to normal by Dec. 31.

Three cable systems carrying more than 75 percent of traffic between the Middle East, Europe and America were damaged, according to the U.K.’s Interoute Plc, which operates a fiber- optic data network connecting 92 cities. The cables run from Alexandria in northern Egypt to Sicily in southern Italy. In January, an anchor severed the cables outside Alexandria after bad weather conditions forced ships to moor off the coast.

“The information we have is a bit sketchy, but chances are that it will have been an anchor again,” Jonathan Wright, Interoute’s director of wholesale products, said in a telephone interview. “Close to 90 percent of all the data traffic between Europe and the Middle East is carried on these three cable systems.”

Interoute said the January incident brought down 70 percent of the Internet network in India and the Middle East.

Egyptian Outage

Customer services and some mobile-phone customers at Vodafone Group Plc’s Egyptian unit are affected by the cable failure, said Simon Gordon, a spokesman for the U.K. company. Egypt is the only country where the company is aware of any problems linked to the failure, he said. Most mobile-phone calls are routed through fixed-line cables at some point.

Verizon Communications Inc., the second-largest U.S. phone company, said it has rerouted traffic for its Verizon Business customers making calls to the Middle East by siphoning it to Europe and the U.S. and then down through Asia, spokeswoman Linda Laughlin said in an interview.

The rerouting slowed some traffic to about half its normal speed, Laughlin said. Point-to-point customers still don’t have connections, and Verizon doesn’t have information on how many subscribers are affected. The company expects repairs to be completed by early next week, she said.

Portugal Telecom SGPS SA, Portugal’s biggest phone company, has redirected traffic through other cables in the region and therefore the “impact is very small,” said a company official. Sonaecom SGPS SA, Portugal’s second-biggest fixed-line phone company, also said that it’s diverting traffic to other routes.

‘Greatly Disturbed’

France Telecom’s Orange mobile-phone unit said the cable failure “greatly disturbed” the traffic between Europe and parts of Asia. At one point as much as 55 percent of voice traffic in Saudi Arabia, 52 percent in Egypt and 82 percent in India was out of service, according to Orange.

Internet traffic “from Mumbai to London has now been rerouted via Hong Kong which may lead to congestion and increased latency on this route,” Reliance said in an e-mailed “traffic disruption update,” adding that it is working with the affected customers to restore all services. The company said it will publish another update on its Web site tomorrow.

“You can reroute the data through other cables, but that increases traffic and can potentially create bottlenecks,” Interoute’s Wright said. “So Internet connections may slow down and some phone calls could get disrupted.”

Weather, Sea Conditions

Some of Interoute’s clients in the U.K. and Southern France are probably affected by the failure, Wright said.

“It’s difficult to forecast how long it will take to fix the problem as it depends on the weather and sea conditions in the Mediterranean,” Wright said.

A fault is affecting the SMW4 cable near the Alexandria cable station, the FLAG FEA cable is down and the SMW3 cable system is also affected, according to information received from Telstra. Flag Telecom Group Ltd., a Reliance Globalcom unit, operates FLAG FEA and the other cables are owned by groups of phone companies across the regions.

Reliance Globalcom doesn’t know exactly what happened and engineers are working on the problem, said Anurag Joshi, head of the company’s global network operations center.

The SMW4 cable, also known as SEA-ME-WE 4or South East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 4 cable network, connects 12 countries: Pakistan, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Italy and France.

France Telecom said one of its maintenance boats in the Mediterranean area is headed to the region for a relief mission with 20 kilometers of spare cable on board.

Priority will be to recover the SEA-ME-WE 4 cable, then the SEA-ME-WE 3 cable, France Telecom said, adding that Sea Me We4 could be operating by Dec. 25 and the situation should be back to normal by Dec. 31.

Information Communication Technology (ICT) has been established as the key enabler of economic growth. The new world economy is very much dependent on ICT to catalyst knowledge creation. The future of a country could be determined by the rate of knowledge exploitation and dissemination.

The Malaysian economy has benefited from the wave created by the electronics industries; to the advent of computing industries; and has banked on the Internet that gave birth to the Multimedia Super Corridor initiatives. As one of the leading nations in ICT, our key competitiveness factor will be exploiting the advancement of ICT. Thus, it is imperative for Malaysia to take the technological leap in order to be in the forefront of the developing nations.

Another significant phase of ICT evolution is Grid
Computing technology. The technology provides the ability of knowledge info-structure as the platform for knowledge collaborations to improve decision making process; on-demand computing resource ; enhance firms and country productivity; and will lead to capital efficiency. Accordingly, it is critical for Malaysia to ride on the next ICT wave realized through Grid Computing.

The National Grid Computing Initiative, now known as KnowledgeGRID Malaysia, will play a pivotal role in bringing Malaysia to the next ICT evolution. This collection of snippets of images provide the country a snapshot overview of Knowledge Grid Malaysia a
s a catalyst for a Knowledge Nation.

The KnowledgeGRID Malaysia is a strategic initiative by the Ministry of Science, Technology & Innovation (MOSTI) which is being spearheaded by MIMOS with a close collaboration with local universities, R&D institutions and industry. The KnowledgeGRID Malaysia will provide a Knowledge infrastructure for the nation that maximises high performance computing resources to accelerate research and industrial development for national wealth and value crea
tion. The National Grid will be the Knowledge infrastructure that combines networked resources – desktops, servers, storage, databases, and scientific instruments – to form a massive repository of computing power to be tapped wherever and whenever it is needed most.

The objectives of KnowledgeGRID Malaysia are:-

To provide Super Computing power to the nation beyond the research communities
To provide highest level Cyberspace Security for critical information
To achieve cost efficiency on Capital Investment for Knowledge Info-structure
To create new web services industries through pay-per-use

What is Grid Computing

dy>

Grid Computing is a form of distributed system where computing resources are shared across networks.

Just as Web standards and technologies enabled universal and transparent access to documents,Grid promises do so for computing resources.

Grid enables the selection, aggregation, and sharing of information resources resident in multiple administrative domains and across geographic areas.

These information resources are shared based upon their availability, capability, and cost, as well as the user’s quality of service (QoS) requirements.
